How Salesforce Powers Autonomous AI Agents with Advanced Reasoning?

Salesforce has introduced the Agentforce suite of low-code tools, which features a powerful reasoning engine called Atlas. This engine aims to revolutionize AI agents by making them autonomous, allowing them to act and reason like humans. Unlike earlier Salesforce agents that required predefined workflows to take actions, the AI agents built with Agentforce can now operate independently.
The Atlas engine enables these AI agents to handle tasks traditionally managed by developers or enterprise architects, shifting these professionals into supervisory roles without the need for constant human input. At Dreamforce 2024, Salesforce CEO Clara Shih highlighted how these autonomous agents mark a significant shift from content generation to agents capable of taking actions independently. She explained that while generative AI tools can help write an email, these advanced agents can address higher-level queries like deciding how to engage with customers—whether through email, phone calls, or texts—and then execute those actions step-by-step.
The automation capabilities of Agentforce are driven by the Atlas reasoning engine, which was developed over nearly a year by a team at Salesforce. This engine combines various large language models (LLMs), large action models (LAMs), retrieval augmented generation (RAG) modules, REST APIs, and connectors to external data sources.
Phil Mui, head of product and architecture at Salesforce AI, detailed how Atlas uses multiple specialized LLMs (usually between eight and twelve) to handle different aspects of a query. The process starts with the Einstein Trust Layer, which checks the user’s input for inappropriate content. If the input passes this check and is deemed a valid query, it moves through several phases, including evaluation, query expansion, and context refinement.
If the initial information provided is insufficient, the agent will loop back to the user for more details. This cycle, called the "agentic loop," continues until the AI agent can adequately process and respond to the query. The goal is to minimize the number of loops and provide a faster response.
During the query execution phase, Atlas employs LAMs and APIGen for function calling, allowing the agent to interact with external tools and APIs to complete tasks. Several additional tools, such as a re-ranker, refiner, and response synthesizer, work together to retrieve, refine, and synthesize context from multiple sources to generate a final response.
Before the response is delivered to the user, it undergoes a quality check through the Quality Evaluator module, followed by additional checks using several LLMs designed to detect toxicity, bias, harm, and manage personally identifiable information (PII). These models ensure the response is safe and meets the required standards before it reaches the user.
