Amazon is publicly revealing a new internal security tool called Autonomous Threat Analysis (ATA) to address the growing threat of AI-powered cyberattacks.

With attackers becoming faster, security teams are overwhelmed by the amount of code they need to review.

Developed from a 2024 internal hackathon, ATA uses multiple specialized AI agents that compete in "red" (attack) and "blue" (defense) teams.

Instead of one comprehensive AI, these agents work together to rapidly find potential system weaknesses, analyze similar flaws, and propose security fixes before hackers can exploit them.

A key feature of ATA is its verifiability. It operates in highly realistic test environments where every attack technique and proposed defense must be proven with real, observable data and logs.

According to Amazon's chief security officer, Steve Schmidt, this requirement for evidence makes AI "hallucinations", or fabrications, "architecturally impossible."

While ATA works autonomously, it requires human approval before any changes are implemented. It is not meant to replace human experts but to handle the large volume of routine security tasks.

This frees up Amazon's security engineers to focus on more complex and nuanced threats.

The system has already proven effective, quickly developing perfect defenses against certain hacking techniques. The next goal is to use ATA for real-time incident response during active attacks.

The "Accelerator" Model: A New Lens for Understanding AI-Powered Cyber Attacks

A recent Anthropic report has ignited discussion on the true capabilities of AI in cyberattacks. The study demonstrated an AI, specially trained for offensive security, completing 80–90% of the tactical work in simulated operations.

While this initially appears to be a major step towards autonomous cyber weapons, the reality is more complex and less alarming.

The AI agent's primary advantage was its speed. It could generate scripts, test known exploits without tiring, scan configurations on a large scale, and set up basic infrastructure far faster than any human. It automated the labor-intensive, repetitive tasks that consume much of an attacker's time.

Critically, however, the report highlights the AI's limitations. Human operators managed the entire strategy: they defined the objectives, planned the campaign, monitored progress, and made all key decisions.

The AI did not choose targets, determine escalation levels, or respond to unexpected defenses. It did not reason about risk, timing, or geopolitical impact; humans handled all strategic elements.

Therefore, the operation was not autonomous but hybrid. The agent enhanced human efficiency and made attacks more scalable, but it never functioned as an independent weapon. It amplified human skill rather than replacing it.

This distinction is vital, as public debate often conflates sophisticated automation with genuine, self-directed intelligence. Creating an AI that automates parts of an attack requires immense human effort and computational resources.

This process does not yield a system that "thinks" or "desires" anything; these models operate through statistical pattern-matching on curated data, not through intent or understanding.

Training such an agent first involves collecting vast specialized datasets: attack logs, exploit patterns, command sequences, and infrastructure templates.

This data must then be cleaned and structured, a process that can take experts months. The models lack inherent knowledge; humans must instruct them.

Following this is the costly phase of training on powerful computer clusters, ongoing tuning, reinforcement learning with human feedback, and rigorous safety testing.

Engineers dictate which behaviors to promote or prohibit, what constitutes a success, and how the model should correct errors. Every stage is human-directed.

While the final model can automate repetitive duties, it lacks the strategic understanding to plan a campaign. It does not select targets, consider consequences, or adapt its goals to changing circumstances. All creative and context-dependent aspects of an attack remain beyond its capabilities.

This gap is why experts are hesitant to label these systems "weapons." A technology becomes weapon-like when it can inflict harm in a targeted, scalable way without needing significant additional expertise or judgment from its user.

Achieving this requires mature engineering, clear malicious intent, and profound human involvement in planning and execution, criteria that current AI agents do not meet.

For now, AI serves as a force multiplier and an accelerant, not a fully independent offensive platform. Attackers still must perform analysis, comprehend complex targets, manage infrastructure, adapt strategies, and make sensitive decisions about escalation.

Nothing in today's models can substitute for human experience, creativity, or accountability.

The trajectory is evident: AI will keep increasing the speed and scale of technical tasks, making more skilled functions automatable. However, full end-to-end automation, from planning to exploitation to decision-making, remains a distant prospect.

AI vs. Armani: Britons Trust Both Equally for Product Info

A new consumer study from Akeneo, a product experience and information management company, reveals that consumer trust in AI-powered virtual agents for checking product details is nearly as high (67%) as their trust in luxury brand websites (68%).

The survey of 1,800 consumers across eight countries found that in the UK, AI agents are considered more reliable than physical stores (62%), resale platforms (54%), influencer content (50%), and social media, which ranked last at 31%.

The report also indicates a shift in trusted sources, with AI agent trust rising while faith in store information has declined.

According to Akeneo CEO Romain Fouache, the core issue is not a lack of content but a lack of clarity. He states that customers actively seek out channels that provide confidence and are willing to pay 25%-30% more for products accompanied by high-quality, comprehensive information.

This includes details on size, sustainability, compatibility, and care instructions.

The research underscores that poor product data continues to harm the customer experience and drive costly returns.

To win in this environment, brands must treat product data as a strategic asset, building a single, governed foundation of clean and structured data that powers consistent experiences across all channels, including new AI assistants.

Ultimately, the report concludes that omnichannel consistency is critical for closing sales, with 76% of shoppers using multiple touchpoints before purchasing. Discrepancies between websites, stores, marketplaces, and AI answers create confusion and lead to abandoned baskets.

Fouache describes the findings as a "wake-up call," showing that consumers follow the most reliable information, not the loudest channel.
